With patience thinning at Senator Grace Poe continuing to refuse an offer to be its vice presidential bet, the ruling Liberal Party may opt for another running mate to Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
Senator Franklin Drilon, LP vice chairman, said it’s about time that the LP should move on, stop wooing Poe and choose another vice presidential candidate.
Poe is front-running poll surveys for presidential preference. Roxas is way below the ladder behind Poe, Vice President Jejomar Binay and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Some LP leaders think Poe as running mate could boost Roxas’ bid.
President Benigno Aquino, LP chairman, has led efforts to convince Poe to run under Roxas. But the Senator has refused the offer.
I will ask the LP National Executive Council (NECO) to convene as soon as possible to choose our vice presidential candidate for 2016, said Drilon.
Reports said in the LP shortlist of potential bets for the second top post at stake in the coming polls are: : Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo, and senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes IV.
Drilon said it is now clear that Poe is rejecting the LP overture because she has an eye for the presidency.
Poe is already a candidate for president. The writings are on the wall, said Drilon.
Poe, he said, is already going around to campaign.
She would not do that if she is not running for president, said Drilon.
