Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said Vice President Jejomar Binay would be a gainer if he (Duterte) would not seek the presidency in 2016.
On September 7, Monday, Duterte, a strong contender in the race, announced that he is not running.
The decision frustrated his supporters and left in the run for the top post Binay of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), Interior Secretary Mar Roxas of the ruling Liberal Party and independent Senator Grace Poe if she joins the derby.
Binay, said Duterte when asked who would benefit from his vote if he skips the race.
Duterte, who did not elaborate why he is choosing Binay, was asked days ahead of his September decision not to run, after a three-hour roundtable discussion with reporters and editors of the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Aug. 25.
