Vice President Jejomar Binay has talked with Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos as the presidential candidate of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) remains without a running mate for the 2016 elections.
Binay did not disclose details of his talk with the Senator but said it was part of the selection process by the opposition UNA.
Binay made the disclosure reported on national television networks in late afternoon news on October 3, when interviewed in Misamis Occidental while he was in a Mindanao-wide sortie.
There are still some personal matters to be resolved, said Binay.
But apparently a tandem was in the offing. Binay earlier said discussion with Marcos was ongoing for the Senator to be his running mate.
A tandem with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who has yet to announce his presidential bid, has been ruled out by Marcos himself.
Marcos had talks with Duterte in Davao City this week but the Senator said he merely sought advice from Duterte.
The meeting did not involve a pairing in the coming elections, he told reporters.
Also this week, Senator Peter Alan Cayetano announced his vice presidential bid in Davao City.
He met with Duterte and was reported to have asked Duterte that he be his running mate.
Reports said Duterte did not give a commitment for the reason that he was not running for president.
A Duterte-Marcos tandem apparently is not feasible as the Partido ng Demokratikong Pilpino-Laban (PDP-Laban), Duterte’s party, smirked at the idea.
PDP-Laban president Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel said that PDP-Laban was formed under the Martial Law during the time of the senator’s father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
It’s hard to reconcile, said Pimentel, whose father, former Senate president Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, fought side-by-side with human rights victims during the reign of the Marcos dictatorship.
Aside from Marcos (Nacionalista Party), four candidates have announced running for vice president in the 2016 race: Senator Chiz Escudero with Senator Grace Poe as standard bearer in an independent dash; Camarines Sur Governor Leni Robredo with Mar Roxas under the administration Liberal party; Senator Antonio Trillanes of the Magdalo Group and Senator Cayetano who has yet to find a standard bearer.
