Even as he would benefit with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte not running in the 2016 presidential election, Vice President Jejomar Binay said he would have loved seeing the popular mayor in the race.
Binay, standard bearer of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), however said that opting out of the race would allow the popular Mindanao mayor to farther push up the economic development of Davao City.
Duterte has junked strong clamor for him to run for President and has filed a reelection bid in his city, Mindanao’s premier metropolis.
Duterte is well known for having transformed Davao City, a former hotbed of criminality and communist insurgency, during his more than two decades as mayor into one of the most progressive and peaceful cities in the country.
Political analysts say that the votes for Duterte, especially in Mindanao where the mayor is a well-loved and respected leader, would go to Binay if Duterte would not run.
“Sayang. Sayang talaga. Kasi si Mayor Duterte talagang huwaran, modelo ng isang magaling na executive,” Binay said in a report in the Manila Bulletin in reaction to news that the mayor had filed for reelection in Davao City instead of vying for the presidency.
“Pero hindi naman lubos na masasayang kasi mai-pagpapatuloy pa niya pa yung mga plano niyang magaganda para sa Davao City,” added the Vice President.
