Vice President Jejomar Binay has come to the rescue of party mate Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao who had been skewered by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community for saying that those in “same marriage are worse than animals.”
Binay is the standard bearer of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) under which boxing hero Pacquiao is running for Senator in the May elections.
Pacquiao is “known to be very God-fearing,” said Binay in Cebu City on February 16 after UNA formed a coalition with local political bloc One Cebu.
Binay, a Catholic, backed Pacquiao, a Christian pastor, on the issue.
“I take the position of the Catholic Church,” said Binay.
Same-sex union is taboo in the Catholic Church.
After the criticisms, Pacquiao said he did not mean to hurt anyone.
I was only telling the truth as stated in the Bible, he said.
