Tourist Rest Area soon to be put up in IGaCoS

DAVAO CITY – The Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) in Davao del Norte will be one of the tourism destinations in the country that will have a Tourist Rest Area.

This as Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid led the groundbreaking ceremony of the Samal TRA at the IGaCoS City Hall complex on Friday (Oct. 7).

Budgeted at P7-million each the Tourist Rest Area will have clean, world class comfort rooms, alongside several amenities such as a coffee shop, pasalubong center, tourist information center and charging stations.

“In our listening tours across the 16 regions, Samal was identified as one of the emerging destinations and by putting up this tourism rest area we believe that we will build confidence in the area, attract more tourists and assist local government units in its efforts towards making tourism flourish,” Sec. Frasco said during the groundbreaking.

The DOT Secretary said it is very important that tourists be given a place to rest, use a comfort room and buy local products.

“This the first in a series of groundbreakings for our tourist rest areas which we intend to put all over the country… In line with the vision of President Bongbong Marcos Jr. for the tourism industry to become one of the major economic pillars for the Philippines’ resurgence post pandemic, we have begun the work of recovery,” Sec. Frasco said.

The DOT Secretary said the groundbreaking of the tourist rest areas is the manifestation of the seriousness of the intention to fully open Mindanao to tourism.

The DOT and TIEZA are eyeing to initially put up 10 TRAs all over the country.  (PIA/RG Alama)

The two islands in the Davao Gulf between Davao del Norte and Davao City, known for pristine waters, marine attractions and white sand beaches,  are being primed by the Department of Tourism (DoT) as a primary tourist destination like Boracay in the Visayas and El Nido in Palawan.
Two of the million-pesos land deals involved  the purchase of the  35-hectare Camp Samalan Resort in San Remegio in Igacos bought at P8 million per hectare and a 114-hectare property in Talicud Island at P3 million per hectare.
The deals were alleged to have been consummated in 2017.
The land deals were reported by a  Davao City-based online news site,  which quoted a property broker, who was not named but alleged to have inside knowledge of the deals. The broker  did not name the buyer.
But the broker said that an Edwin Jubahib two years ago inquired about the properties for sale in Igacos and Talicud.

A check with the Department of Trade and Industry reportedly showed a business registration under the name of Edwin Ignacio Jubahib.
The business is registered as Samalenyo-Pearl Resort with address at Barangay San Remigio, Island Garden City of Samal. One of the properties in the deal is Camp Samalan Resort located in San Remegio.
Jubahib, the personal assistant of Davao del Norte First District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, is a candidate for governor in Davao del Norte in the 2019 mid-term election.
Alvarez, former Speaker of the House of Representatives is running for reelection.
The name of Jubahib earlier also surfaced as an owner of a resort and the high-end bar Hot Spot in General Luna town in Siargao Island, following other reports  that Alvarez bought prime beachfront properties worth P500 million in Siargao.
The reports said that records at the Siargao Municipal Assessor’s Office (MAO) showed seven properties in the name of Alvarez, two under the name of a certain Anaclito Alvarez and another two under Carlito Alvarez.
Alvarez admitted buying the properties but added they were bought long before he became House Speaker in 2016.
